Using the Configuration Editor

  • Which components are needed for our communication aid?
  • How are they connected?

These are the questions to be answered when using the Configuration Editor. This editor is for selecting and linking the components used in an application. Most components have settings (properties) which can be adjusted via the Property display. It is easy to export a configuration from one ComLink application and import it into another one, if required.

Shown below is a configuration for the Messenger with the following components as listed underneath the screenshot:

Switch input you can set one or two switches.
Scanning selection select from a list of methods including autoscan and userscan.
Selection set symbolises the selection set which will eventually be created using the Layout Editor; most applications will have a single selection set, but ComLink allows two users to share an application, each with their own selection set
Emit filter you can choose whether text and/or speech is output on scanning or selection.
Layout output symbolises the output area, which will eventually be created using the Layout editor; as with the selection set component above, the possibility is there for two users sharing an application to have different output areas, one writing in text and one in Blissymbols, for example.
Speech output provides digitised speech output.

In the future, new components will become available. Maybe new switch input and selection method components will support more than two switches, or morse code, for example. An assessment centre Integrator could then upgrade a ComLink application to use such new components, without needing to return the application to the manufacturer.

After the configuration of our communication aid has been specified, the next step in the design process involves the Layout Editor
